Around three years after the launch of the game-changing Model S in 2012, Tesla started building the taller, heavier Model X SUV. Like the Model S, the Model X was the first electric car in its segment with usable range. The Model S’ slingshot acceleration also carried over. Five years later, the Model X still has few legitimate competitors, but it’s likely to be cross-shopped against the Audi E-Tron, Jaguar I-Pace, as well as the newer and less expensive Tesla Model Y.
